A comprehensive eye exam is more than just checking your glasses prescription—it’s a full health check for your eyes. Here's what to expect:
Vision Check: We’ll measure how well you see (visual acuity) and determine if you need glasses or an updated prescription.
Eye Muscle and Movement Testing: We’ll check how your eyes work together and how well they move.
Pupil Response Testing: We look at how your pupils respond to light, which can tell us a lot about your neurological function.
Eye Pressure Check (Glaucoma Screening): We gently measure the pressure inside your eyes to screen for glaucoma.
Slit-Lamp Exam: This specialized microscope lets us examine the front parts of your eye—like the cornea, lens, and iris—for any signs of disease or damage.
Dilated Eye Exam: We use special drops to dilate (widen) your pupils. This allows Dr. Caruana to look carefully at the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels in the back of your eye—areas that are essential for healthy vision and often where early signs of eye disease appear.
You may experience blurred vision and light sensitivity for a few hours after dilation, so bring sunglasses and consider arranging a ride if needed. We now offer dilation reversal drops for patients that need to recover from dilation very quickly after the exam.
Why Is It Important?
Even if your vision seems fine, many eye conditions develop silently and without pain—including:
- Glaucoma
- Macular degeneration
- Diabetic eye disease
- Retinal tears or detachments
- Cataracts
Catching these problems early can help protect your sight and give you more treatment options.
How Often Should I Have One?
Most adults should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam every 6 - 12 months, depending on age, risk factors, and medical history. If you have diabetes, a family history of eye disease, or are over age 65, you may need more frequent exams.
